Toomevara 0-21 Moycarkey-Borris 0-11
Toomevara got their County Senior Hurling Championship campaign off to the perfect start by virtue of a comfortable victory over Moycarkey-Borris. This Group 3 game was played in the picturesque surrounds of Templederry on a dry, windy Saturday evening.
Moycarkey-Borris had the aid of the strong breeze in the first half and got off to a quick start, using the long ball to good effect and racing in to a 0-3 to 0-1 lead courtesy of two Kieran Morris frees and a Pat Ralph point from play. At this stage, Toomevara withdrew their centre-back David Young to sit in front of their full-back line which worked to good effect, restricting Moycarkey’s attempts at playing the ball in to their full-forward line. At the same time, Toomevara began to make inroads up front with Willie Ryan scoring four points (three from frees) to leave the teams level at 0-5 each after 20 minutes.
Toomevara were now well on top in defence and midfield and this gave them the platform to mount numerous attacks. This pressure eventually began to translate in to scores as Willie Ryan (2), Colm Canning, Mark McCarthy and Joey McLoughney all scored from play in the last ten minutes of the first half to effectively end the game as a contest, racing in to a 0-11 to 0-6 interval lead with the aid of the strong wind to come. Moycarkey’s only efforts at goal in this period came courtesy of two 20 metre frees taken by goalkeeper Bill McCormack but both were blocked on the line by the Toomevara defence.
Following the impressive finish to the first half, the intensity of Toomevara’s play dropped somewhat in the third quarter as Moycarkey’s play improved. Scoring was at a premium as Toomevara were content to swap points with their Mid opponents and with 10 minutes remaining, 5 points still remained between the teams. When top scorer Willie Ryan was forced off injured with 7 minutes left, Toomevara supporters may have wondered where their scores would now come from but instead, they hit a rich vein of form. Joey McLoughney scored his second long range free of the half to be quickly followed by points from play from Eoin Brislane, Colm Canning, substitute Paddy Grace and Benny Dunne to run out 10 point winners.
Toomevara were richly deserving of their win and can thank a strong defence led by Darren Delaney, David Young and Benny Dunne. Joey McLoughney put in an impressive hour at midfield while up front, Willie Ryan chipped in with eight points, four from play helped by two points each from Colm Canning and Eoin Brislane. Moycarkey will be disappointed with their performance, in particular up front where their starting forwards combined to record just five points from play and no score at all in the last quarter. Further back the field, James Bourke, James Power and Niall O’Sullivan led the resistance while Rory O’Regan and Rory Ryan (when moved to midfield) got through an amount of work.
